Check Your Cholesterol Levels

There are a number of different things that you can do to keep your heart healthy; checking your cholesterol levels is one of them. Issues with high cholesterol tend to make your heart work harder than it is meant to. This is one of the reasons why regular checks are necessary, especially for people who have a family history of heart diseases.

There are four different important aspects of cholesterol levels: the overall cholesterol numbers, HDL, LDL and triglycerides.  You should know what the normal levels for these are so that you can compare them against your cholesterol levels. The American Heart Association provides information on these levels and what they mean.

Overall cholesterol levels

The optimum value for overall cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL; however, values between 200 mg/dL and 239 mg/dL are the limits of high cholesterol. Some will discover that obesity and poor eating habits have impacted their overall levels. It is also possible to see a connection between fitness, stress, and habits upon your cholesterol levels.

HDL levels

HDL or high density lipoprotein is typically referred to as good cholesterol. This is because this lipoprotein works to help the body remove the bad cholesterol. The normal HDL levels are less than 40 mg/dL for men and less than 50 mg/dL for women. People with higher HDL levels have a higher risk of heart disease.

LDL levels

LDL or low density lipoprotein is the bad cholesterol in the body. Excessive values of LDL play a role in the clogging of arteries, which leads to heart diseases. Normal LDL levels are typically less than 139 mg/dL. When they reach 190 mg/dL or above, they put the patient in a danger zone; this is one of the reasons that doctors focus on reducing LDL numbers.

Triglyceride levels

Triglycerides are another aspect of cholesterol levels. A triglyceride is actually a type of fat that exists in the blood, and is used by the body as an energy source. Therefore, we need low triglyceride levels in our blood to be healthy; however, increases triglyceride levels can put stress on the heart. Normal for triglyceride values are less than 150 mg/dL, while values between 200 mg/dL and 499 mg/dL represent high levels.

It is important to know your own cholesterol levels if you want to know what is your health state since people with high cholesterol levels are prone to heart conditions. Medication and specific dietary plans may be prescribed to deal with this situation and to lower cholesterol levels.
