The easiest and most accurate test?that no one wants to take?is the fasting blood glucose test. The reason people are reluctant is that they are afraid that they will be diagnosed with prediabetes, diabetes type 2, or worse, diabetes type 1. In 2011, type 2 diabetes and its precursor, prediabetes, have been confirmed in 21 million people, meaning four million more than in 2001.

Fasting Blood Glucose ? A Thorough Procedure

Ideally, the fasting blood glucose test is done in the morning, when its results are most accurate. It is also very convenient considering you have to fast, or go without food and water, for at least eight hours before you take the fasting blood glucose test. All you have to do is show up and the nurse will take a sample of your blood which will be analyzed using the fasting blood glucose test. If it shows that you have a higher than normal reading, the test needs to be repeated the next day. Two positive readings confirm the diagnosis; however, if the second reading shows good results, a third test is done for confirmation.

Startling Numbers

In the United States, more than 50% of the people over 65 years of age who took the fasting blood glucose test have been diagnosed with either prediabetes or diabetes type 2. In addition, 35% of people in their twenties who have taken the fasting blood glucose test have prediabetes. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has determined that if we follow our current trend, the fasting blood glucose test would show positive for diabetes and prediabetes in one out of three Americans by the year 2050.

What’s The Big Deal

The contributing factors to diabetes and prediabetes are pretty much the same. Prediabetes is the condition in which we begin to lose the ability to produce insulin, the chemical in our bodies that converts sugar to energy, among other things. Age is a contributing factor as the older we become, the more likely the fasting blood glucose test works against us. Another factor is race.

Surprising Ethnic Groups

Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and native Alaskans are especially predisposed to diabetes; but this does not mean that all of them have it. According to the statistics, 16.1% of Native American Indians and Native Alaskans who have been tested were diagnosed with diabetes. The fasting blood glucose test is the most common test for detecting this disease. Unfortunately, for women, many develop prediabetes while pregnant, again determined with the fasting blood glucose test. Moreover, these women have an increased risk of developing diabetes within the next ten to twenty years.
